Types of Plant Trellises: A Complete Guide to Styles and Uses

In the world of gardening, a trellis is a fundamental tool designed to support climbing or vining plants. By offering a stable structure for plants to grasp and grow upon, trellises serve multiple critical functions: they maximize growing space, improve air circulation to reduce disease, elevate fruits and flowers for easier harvest, and add vertical interest to the garden's design. What is Trellis? A trellis is a foundational gardening structure, primarily functioning as a supportive framework for climbing plants. However, to describe it merely as "support" is to underestimate its role. A trellis is an architectural element that shapes growth, maximizes space, and enhances the aesthetic of any garden. At its core, a trellis is any open, lattice-like construction—made of wood, metal, vinyl, or other materials—that provides a surface for vines and climbers to attach to, either by twining, clinging with tendrils, or being manually tied. This simple function unlo...

What is Monoculture Farming?

Photo by Alejandro Barrón Monoculture derived from the Greek word “ μόνος / mónos ” meaning  “alone, only, sole, single” and “ Culture ” borrowed from latin word “cultÅ«ra / cult / cultus” means 'cultivation', which refers to set of work performed on land. Monoculture Farming is simply a practice of planting one type of crop or raising one type of animal at a time on specific farmland. This system has pros and cons to be considered. Monoculture farming offers advantages such as simplified management, increased efficiency in planting, harvesting, and pest control, and higher yields due to optimized conditions for a single crop. Additionally, it can facilitate mechanization and streamline the use of agricultural inputs like fertilizers and irrigation systems. However, monoculture farming also comes with cons such as increased vulnerability to pests, diseases, and soil degradation, as well as reduced biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. Growing one crop c...

What are the Problems faced by the farmers today?

In this blog post, we will delve into seven common issues currently faced by farmers. These challenges can vary based on factors such as geographical location, scale of farming, and local economic conditions. Addressing these problems often requires a combination of technological innovations, policy changes, and support systems to ensure sustainable agricultural practices and the well-being of farmers. Climate Change One of the most significant predicaments for farmers today is climate change. Rising temperatures, unpredictable weather patterns, and extreme climatic events can all have devastating effects on crops. This can result in crop failure, reduced yields, and increased costs for farmers who need to invest in additional resources to offset their losses. Furthermore, climate change can also lead to heightened pest pressure and disease outbreaks, further diminishing returns and profits. How to inject iron properly in the piglets?

Young pigs require iron to help protect their bodies against potential illnesses. Pigs are born with approximately 40-50mg of iron reserves in their bodies, which can last for only four days. Therefore, supplemental iron should be given to young pigs as early as possible, preferably on their 3rd day after birth. An injection of 100mg/1ml of iron content should be administered to support their iron needs and prevent anemia, which can occur after 10-15 days. To improve the survival rate, another dose of iron should be given to the young pig on its 10th or 14th day after birth. A deficiency of iron, an essential mineral for piglets, can lead to anemia (a low level of hemoglobin in the red blood cells). Anemia can result in difficulty breathing for animals due to reduced oxygen transportation in the body, making the animal more susceptible to diseases. Here is the proper way to inject iron into piglets: Prepare a bottle of iron, a syringe, cotton, and alcohol. Fill the syringe with 1ml ...

The Chicken egg hatching process

Chicken eggs need to be incubated at a temperature of 37 - 39 degrees Celsius, either through natural incubation or using an incubator. After 19 to 21 days of brooding, the first crack may become visible on the egg's surface. However, it is important not to assist the chick in breaking out of the shell at this point, as it can have severe impacts on the chick's health, especially if the eggshell cracks on the 19th day of incubation. The chicks should fully consume their food inside the shell. The yolk serves as a nutritive material during the embryonic period, while the albumen (egg white) provides protein for cell development. Both of these play an essential role in the embryo's development. What part does the chick use for pipping?  The Chick's Egg tooth, which is lost soon after hatching, is responsible for pipping. An egg tooth is a small, elongated bone above the upper mandible. The chick's neck muscle, called the pipping muscle, helps it reach the egg surf...

Regrowing Carrot tops

Carrots are root vegetables that can be regrown from the carrot tops or tops with about one inch of the carrot itself. Instead of discarding the carrot tops, they can be used to sprout new leaves and grow new carrot greens. To regrow carrots from the tops, follow these steps: Cut off the carrot tops, leaving about an inch of the carrot attached. Place the carrot tops in a shallow dish or container with water, ensuring that the cut end is submerged. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh. After a week or two, you should start to see new leaves sprouting from the tops. Once the new leaves have grown, you can transplant the carrot tops into a pot or garden bed with well-draining soil. Carrots are not only delicious but also rich in various vitamins and minerals, particularly beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A in the body and is essential for good vision, immune function, and overall health. So, regrowing carrots not only allows you to enjoy their...

4 things to know for planting Pili (Canarium ovatum)

Pili ( Canarium ovatum ) is a fruit-bearing tree with significant potential as a major export crop. As a tropical plant, it thrives in regions with evenly distributed rainfall, such as the Bicol region. The young fruits are green and turn purplish-black when fully ripe. While pili nuts are the most popular Bicolano product, the fruit's flesh is also used to make viands like Tampuyak, a delicacy in the Rinconada area. This versatility allows the pili tree to sustain the needs of various industries. Expedite the Germination Process Pili seeds are the primary means for sowing and cultivation. However, the natural germination process can be slow; according to the Bureau of Agricultural Research, seeds typically require an average of 57 days to germinate. This means it can take approximately 70 days after sowing for the plant to fully sprout and develop its first pair of young leaves. To minimize the germination time, you can follow a simple technique. Using a bolo or similar tool, cr...

How to make Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ) and what are the possible uses of it?

Today, I will teach you how to make Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ) and discuss its possible uses. Fermented Plant Juice is an organic pesticide derived from specific plants, such as madre de cacao, which helps prevent insects and pests from damaging your plants when applied through spraying. Additionally, FPJ can also serve as a fertilizer for your plants, as madre de cacao is rich in nitrogen, which is one of the essential macronutrients required by plants. If you are eco-friendly, health-conscious, and a farmer who practices organic methods, you may find this topic interesting. Before starting the process, gather madre de cacao leaves and molasses in a 2:1 ratio. Prepare a plastic container for the fermentation process. Use a bolo and cutting board to cut the madre de cacao leaves into small pieces, as smaller pieces are better for fermentation. Have a strainer ready for separating the leaves into FPJ. Follow these step-by-step instructions to make Fermented Plant Juice (FPJ)...
